Screening Tests Guidelines for Men
Men usually believe they are less at risk to disease because they are tough by nature. Men tend to hide feelings and put on a brave face - which often includes ignoring pain. If they complain of any ailment or illness they often believe it is a sign of weakness.
Despite what men think, statistics show that mens health has become a matter of serious concern especially when women are living longer than men. The big problem is most men will look after their car better than what they look after themselves. They only end up in a doctor's office because they were forced to by partners or loved ones or because the stomach pain, backache became unbearable and wouldnt go away.
Men should understand that first step to good health is preventive investigation. Scientists compiled a list of screenings and immunizations for men at average risk for most diseases. The most important ones we'll point in this article.
1. Tests in conjunction with a routine physical examination:
a. Blood pressure test. It must be performed at least every 2 years.
b. Cholesterol test. Cholesterol testing is recommended as a screening test to be done on all adults at least once every five years.
c. Dental examination. The best way to evaluate your dental health and assist you in obtaining necessary treatment. The recommendation is to be performed One to two times every year.
d. Testicular exam. Monthly self-exam is recommended; and part of a general checkup
2. Tests targeting a special disease:
a. Digital Rectal Exam (DRE), a screening for hemorrhoids, anal fissures, early detection of colon/rectal cancer and prostate cancer. It must be done at doctor's recommendation.
b. Prostate specific antigen test. The result of the test will decide whether to check further for signs of prostate cancer. Doctors recommendations for this screening vary. Some encourage yearly screening for men over age 50.
c. Fecal occult blood test. Simple and nonsurgical, the fecal occult blood test is one way to detect hidden (occult) blood in the stool.and eventual colorectal cancer and other conditions. To be performed yearly
NOTE: These are guidelines only. Your doctor will personalize the timing of each test to best meet your health care needs.
