Gay Versus Feminine Speech

We have all heard the stereotypes concerning gay men. One of them is concerning the way that they talk. The tone of their voice is supposed to be softer than a straight mans voice. The feminine tones in a males voice are supposed to indicate that they are homosexual. Is there any truth to this?

Studies have been conducted to see if there is truth to the stereotype. Well, you have to realize that there is some validity to every stereotype. The fact of the matter is that there are always those who will break that stereotype; we need only to discover how many fit the mold and how many do not fit that mold. Research suggests that less than half of gay men actually sound gay. Some gay men, in fact, sound very straight. It is also true that some straight men sound gay.

The feminine lisp, a breathy speech pattern or the ability to reach higher tones have always been triggers that suggest that a man is not heterosexual. It is difficult to pinpoint how this stereotype originated. It is also a challenge to figure out if there is a certain speech pattern or aspect of language that is common among a majority or all of gay men. Several studies have to done, however it is mostly white middle class gay men who have been researched.

Is there such a thing as gayspeak? It has been said that the vocabulary, more than the quality and tone of the voice, is a better indicator that someone is homosexual. It has also been suggested that gays, as well as lesbians do have a language of their own. It is perhaps that one would have to be homosexual to understand the connotations of the words used and perhaps straight people just havent developed and understanding for it. It does make sense, since there is a community of gays and lesbians, and often communities develop their own way of communicating. These ways of communicating within a group are often discreet and difficult for outsiders to grasp.

If there is a gayspeak that is unique to the homosexual community, it is very subtle. It may also be true that this language is widely varied, just as other languages have different dialects.

Generally, all we can really say is that some homosexual men sound gay. Some heterosexual men sound gay. Feminine tones in a male voice will probably always raise questions about the sexual orientation of that man. Sometimes they will be gay and other times they will be straight. As far as gayspeak it is most likely true that there is a way that gay men communicate with each other, vocabulary wise and nonverbally, that people outside of the gay community probably wont understand. Many men might sound more feminine than other men but that doesnt necessarily mean that they are gay. Many men sound more masculine than other men, but that doesnt necessarily mean that they are straight.
